Christmas season is around and WordPress is offering site owners an option to show snow effect on their websites without plugins. This can be enabled both on self-hosted WordPress (WordPress.org) sites and WordPress.com sites, without the need for installing a plugin.

To enable this on your WordPress sites, you will need to login into your WordPress WP Admin dashboard, or login to the WordPress.com dashboard and enable it for each site you own from there.

How to enable snow effect on your WordPress.com sites using the WordPress.com dashboard

Visit the WordPress.com settings dashboard and choose your WordPress.com site from the list shown there. If you have only on WordPress.com site, it will load the settings section of that WordPress.com site directly.

Look for an option called Show falling snow on my blog until January 4th and toggle it on.

Once done, this WordPress.com site of yours will start showing the snow effect for all viewers who visit your site.

How to enable snow effect on your self-hosted WordPress (WordPress.org) site

If your site is a self-hosted WordPress (WordPress.org) site, you will need to use the WP Admin dashboard and not the WordPress.com dashboard to enable this. Follow the instructions below to enable this.

Visit your self-hosted WordPress (WordPress.org) site’s dashboard using the address http://sitename.com/wp-admin/options-general.php where sitename.com is your site’s top-level domain (TLD)

Look for an option called Show falling snow on my blog until January 4th and toggle it on.

Once done, the snow effect will be live and show up for all viewers who visit your self-hosted WordPress (WordPress.org) site.

WordPress.com users can disable snow effect on all WordPress.com sites using an account-level setting

Note that every WordPress.com user has control over whether they see the snow on all WordPress.com sites, or not at all. Logged out visitors will see the snow unless you disable it on your specific site as well.

In other words, no matter what your snow effect is on your WordPress.com site, all WordPress.com site readers can control the visibility of snow effect globally on all WordPress.com sites they visit using the option available on the WordPress.com account settings page.

This visibility control does not apply to self-hosted WordPress (WordPress.org) sites. It works only on WordPress.com sites.
